In August, the US Federal Communications Commission adopted new rules to reserve a slice of the 5 GHz spectrum band specifically for operation of uncrewed air systems (UAS).

The decision, which allows “limited access” to spectrum in the 5030-5091 MHz band for use by drones, was applauded by AUVSI and other drone advocates and is a clear sign that the drone market in the US continues to grow and mature.

Doodle Labs’ Helix OEM Mesh Rider Radio (RM-5200) is a multi-band mesh datalink that includes support for the 5030 MHz to 5091 MHz band newly designated for drones by the FCC. The model is already available for purchase.

Additionally, Doodle Labs is actively exploring developing access to the 5060 MHz band across other models and form-factors.

The FCC’s Report and Order further establishes a foundation for dynamic frequency assignment, in which UAS operators can request and utilize spectrum based on specific flight plans.

This newly designated band has potential use for UAS applications across a variety of industries, including agriculture, transportation, infrastructure assessment and maintenance and public safety.
